Ergonomics, workload and efficiency in robotic-assisted vs. conventional TKA using the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution (VRAS)

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) places considerable physical and cognitive demands on surgical teams, contributing to fatigue and strain.

While robotic systems are known to improve precision, their impact on workload, ergonomics, and OR efficiency remains less well understood. As focus on staff well-being grows, evaluating these factors is increasingly important.

This single-center study at AZ Sint-Jan (Bruges, Belgium) evaluated 20 primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures (10 robotic-assisted, 10 conventional) performed by a high-volume surgeon. Total OR time, workload and ergonomics were assessed using NASA TLX, RULA/REBA scoring, and detailed intraoperative workflow analytics via an AI-powered digital twin platform.
